Putting Scribbeo Through Its Paces:

How Scribbeo™ Helped the NCIS: Los Angeles Creative Team Work Faster, More Efficiently and Streamline Communication

Television production today works at a breakneck pace. So when the Scribbeo team approached NCIS: Los Angeles about a new app for wireless viewing and remote collaboration, creator and executive producer Shane Brennan, co-producer Erik Whitmyre and associate producer Chris Molnar jumped on board. They quickly discovered that Scribbeo™ simplified the communication process between the NCIS: Los Angeles creative team and post, streamlined the workflow, and helped them work faster and more efficiently.

“Everyone will find Scribbeo™ useful – the director, producer, studio exec, editor, sound editor, music supervisor, post supervisor,” Brennan says. “The app itself is very simple to set up and use, and communicating is clearer because I can make mark-ups right on the screen, verbally record notes, type written comments or all three – whichever method conveys my intentions in the best way.”

According to the NCIS: Los Angeles team, the most advantageous use of Scribbeo™ is its ability to share and collaborate remotely. From Australia, Brennan was able to watch and comment on material from a hotel or conference room – even from the beach – giving Whitmyre and Molnar a full set of remarks with still frame references in a timely and effortless manner. Brennan recalled with great satisfaction how he finished a sound mix while in his native country with a music supervisor in Los Angeles who was receiving Brennan’s typed notes from Scribbeo™. Meanwhile, Whitmyre was in the mountains of Idaho, also accessing the show via the app, listening to the sound mix and giving feedback to the mix crew. He found that the ease of streaming – even in a poor WiFi environment – was a big improvement

Scribbeo™ also solves the laborious process of distributing dailies. In a beta test study, the NCIS: Los Angeles team found it faster and easier to upload a file to a server rather than compress a file, burn a DVD, drive it to several locations for viewing, and then worry about proper destruction of the disc. Dailies were organized in the editing room, posted to the secure server and an email was sent to those on the distribution list, notifying them instantly when material was available to stream.

Scribbeo™ can save hundreds of miles of driving each day and precious time that is wasted in the delivery of hard copies of the previous day's work. Material distributed via Scribbeo™ is secure, with no DVDs or tapes to lose or downloads to be duplicated, stolen or passed around; plus the image quality is far better.

This application offers incredible flexibility. Feedback can be communicated in many forms – text, voice recordings, touch created frame markups, as well as Final Cut Pro and Avid timeline markers – making the lives of the editors and assistant editors easier. For instance, jumping from marker to marker in an editing program simplified the pages upon pages of handwritten notes, conveying everyone’s creative vision more clearly.

The NCIS: Los Angeles team agrees: Scribbeo™ gave the team more time to deliver a better product in an age where audiences expect television shows to be more and more like feature films. Brennan, Molnar and Whitmyre believe that productions across the globe will benefit from it. “This app is fantastic; I can’t imagine myself trying to work without it,” Brennan concludes.
